The Charter Oak Giving Tree
Our Community Giving Program reflects our commitment to the local communities that we have been serving for over 75 years, and emphasizes our way of thinking: relationships beyond banking. Through our Community Giving Program, we donate monetary support to local non-profits, often help individuals in need, and take part in local initiatives through volunteerism. Community Scholarship Program
We’ve expanded our scholarship program and will award more than 35 scholarships, totaling more than $70,000, to college-bound students throughout eastern Connecticut this May. One student from each high school in New London and Windham counties will be selected as a scholarship winner. Each student will receive one $2,000 scholarship to be used towards his or her fall 2015 tuition.
CEO Brian Orenstein says it’s easy to apply for our newly expanded scholarships. Listen to his interview on WBMW!

Community Partnership Program
Through the Community Partnership Program, we support and sponsor a variety of programs, events, and community groups that may not fall under the 501(c) categories. For consideration, complete the Request Form.
Each Friday, many of Charter Oak’s employees pay a fee to dress casually in support of individuals, families, and community groups in need of emergency funding. Thousands of dollars are donated each year and have helped families fill their oil tanks in the winter or put food in their refrigerator; and have supported homeless shelters in need of immediate assistance.
Should you or an organization be experiencing financial difficulty, please submit your written request detailing your hardship to:
Community Outreach Committee
Charter Oak Federal Credit Union
1055 Hartford Turnpike

All applicants will be notified in writing of the Community Outreach Committee’s decision. All requests remain confidential.
Charter Oak prides itself on Community Involvement and realizes that sometimes a little sweat equity, time, or an extra hand is needed just as much as monetary support. For this reason, Charter Oak established a Community Involvement Team comprised of employees looking to volunteer and to make a difference in New London and Windham counties. Through Community Involvement, employees can work towards making our local communities better places to live and work in. Contact Charter Oak’s Marketing Department at 860-446-3238 or toll free at 800-962-3237 extension 3238 to learn more about our volunteer initiatives.
Charter Oak also gives back to the community by promoting financial education and awareness. Our two high school branches (located at Killingly High School in Dayville and Robert E. Fitch Senior High School in Groton) employ students interested in careers in financial service, and encourage students to start saving for the future. We also visit other area high schools and organizations within our field of membership to make presentations on budgeting, saving and more.
