PROTECT YOUR IDENTITY THIS TAX SEASON
Tax Refund Fraud Is Among Latest in Identity Theft Scams
Charter Oak Federal Credit Union would like to warn all members to proceed with caution when filing their taxes this spring. Tax-preparation and refund fraud are among the latest in identity theft scams, with many consumers being drawn into schemes by individuals claiming to be tax preparers. Last year alone, the IRS prosecuted more than 200 individuals claiming to be tax preparers.
With tax season in full swing, Charter Oak urges all Credit Union members to safeguard their personal information. This would include your username, password, PIN, Social Security number, ATM/Debit card number, account number or any other personal data that could potentially be used in an identity theft scheme. Remember, never give out personal information on the phone, through the mail, or on the Internet unless you've initiated the contact or are sure you know whom you're dealing with.
Have a safe and happy tax season!
