Credit Union Employees Share Financial Knowledge with Area Students
Groton, CT-March 4, 2009-Area students have been cashing in on financial educational programming thanks to several outgoing Charter Oak employees. Mary Meyers, Tracy Stedman, and Cathie Forier have been spending time in local high school classrooms in order to teach young adults the importance of good financial practices.
Since December, Charter Oak employees Mary Meyers and Tracy Stedman have been sharing their knowledge of the credit union industry with personal finance students of both Ledyard and Fitch high schools. Meyers and Stedman incorporated topics from the National Endowment for Financial Education's Financial Planning Program, as well as stories from their own personal banking experiences into the Banks in Action course presented to students. Covering the fundamentals; topics ranged from the importance of saving, investing, lending, as well as the types of careers available in banking and finance. The final class at Fitch focused on fraud, featuring Cathie Forier of the Credit Union's Security and Fraud Department as guest speaker.
Dedicated to improving the financial literacy of the youth in its communities, Charter Oak also has a branch located in Fitch High School, where many students and faculty members come in each week to open accounts or make transactions. Students also enjoy a variety of promotions and giveaways -from a laptop to pens, iPods and pocket folders, as well as book bags, foam fingers and calculators. Most importantly, the students get a dose of financial education.
