CHARTER OAK’S HIGH SCHOOL BRANCHES
GET CREATIVE TO PROMOTE SAVING
Encouraging Students to Save for the Future, Charter Oak Gets Creative with Special Promotions & Projects
Groton, CT-March 30, 2011 – Charter Oak Federal Credit Union, which operates two high school branches (one at Danielson’s Killingly High School and one at Groton’s Fitch High School) is committed to educating area teens about the basics in personal finance. Offering free financial literacy materials through its Focused on Finances Program, the Credit Union also provides educational services and low-cost deposit products that encourage teens to save for the future.
Realizing that it’s not always easy to get students excited about personal finance, Charter Oak has developed creative projects and promotions that expose students to the basics of banking while encouraging them to get serious about saving for life after high school. This fall, the Credit Union launched its “Back to School Shopping Spree” promotion, which allowed students who saved $5 or more in their Charter Oak student savings account the chance to win a $500 gift card. Over 150 students from Fitch and Killingly made deposits to their savings accounts -with two winners recently chosen from each high school branch. To keep the saving momentum going, this spring, students can win monthly prizes like iPods, cameras and more.
In addition to special promotions geared to entice students to save, the Credit Union also collaborates with educators on special projects aimed at enhancing the curriculum and exposing students to the Credit Union. Last spring for example, Charter Oak’s Marketing Department teamed up with local professionals from The Day, Citadel Communications and Quinn & Hary Marketing to hold an “Apprentice Challenge” at Fitch. Nearly two-dozen students took part in the competition, collaborating with the guest professionals to brainstorm new marketing ideas for the Focused on Finances Program. Several ideas from that project have already been implemented including painting the Credit Union’s window trim at the high school bright orange. This past February, Fitch art students donated their time to paint a new mural inside the branch which features Charter Oak’s signature orange logo. Transforming the walls to make the office space more exciting for students, the mural is just another way teens are getting involved with their high school’s Credit Union branch.
