Groton, CT - September 25, 2009-Charter Oak Federal Credit Union Supervisory Committee Member Wayne J. Burgess was honored recently at the 2009 CT AFL-CIO Convention in New Haven. Recognized for his union leadership, organized labor advocacy, volunteerism and community efforts, Burgess received salutations from AFL-CIO Union President John Olsen, Congressmen Joe Courtney and Chris Murphy, as well as Susan Bysiewicz from the Office of the CT State Treasurer.
Over the years, Burgess has held several union leadership positions, including Financial Secretary of the Marine Draftsmen Association Local 571, Vice President of the CT AFL-CIO and President of the Southeastern CT Central Labor Council. His community efforts are also extensive, serving on the Norwich Supervisory Committee for Charter Oak Federal Credit Union, on the Executive Board and Board of Directors for the United Way of SECT, as well as volunteering for the J. Driscoll United Labor Agency, the Gemma Moran Food Center, Electric Boat Community Services Association, Riverfront Children's Learning Center, the Abused Women's Center and the American Red Cross. Burgess has also championed educational programs by obtaining federal funding for a successful School to Career Program in Groton, as well as a statewide Union Mentoring Program.
