CHARTER OAK RECEIVES HONORS FOR FINANCIAL LITERACY EFFORTS
Charter Oak Receives Award from the Desjardins Youth Financial Education Award Program
Groton, CT-July 15, 2011- Charter Oak Federal Credit Union’s financial literacy efforts have recently been honored both nationally and locally. Recognized by the Credit Union National Foundation’s Desjardins Youth Financial Education Award Program, Charter Oak was recognized for its leadership within the credit union movement on behalf of financial literacy. In addition to this prestigious award, Killingly High School educators presented Credit Union employees with a plaque of appreciation at their annual Career Pathways event; thanking Charter Oak for implementing the Focused on Finances Program at the new high school.
Committed to teaching young adults the basics of personal finance, Charter Oak has grown its financial literacy efforts over the past four years-reaching out to local community groups, schools and individuals to offer educational presentations, materials and counseling. With its two high school branches (located in Robert E. Fitch Senior High School in Groton and in Killingly High School in Danielson), Charter Oak has reached out to hundreds of high school students by enforcing a variety of critical education requirements, offering a basic group of low-cost financial products and employing student tellers who earn hourly wages while learning specific job skills. Supplementing their in-school branches with educational presentations and promotions, Charter Oak has grown its Focused on Finances Program to include topics such as marketing, interviewing skills, budgeting and more.
